The source of the River Ebro: a magical place in Cantabria

In the heart of Cantabria, surrounded by forests and meadows, springs forth the water that will become one of the most important rivers on the Iberian Peninsula: the River Ebro. Its source, in the town of Fontibre (part of the municipality of Hermandad de Campoo de Suso), is a place steeped in history, legend and natural beauty, perfect for a visit at any time of year.

A spring with history

The place name Fontibre comes from the Latin Fontes Iberis, meaning «source of the Ebro». There, at an altitude of around 880 metres, a spring emerges that gives life to the great river that will travel more than 900 kilometres to its mouth in the Mediterranean. Although modern studies have shown that part of its flow comes from the River Híjar, tradition has established this spring as the official birthplace of the Ebro.

Nature and surroundings

The area has been developed as an accessible natural space that is very pleasant for walking. Among centuries-old trees and shaded paths, visitors will find a small pond where water springs forth, presided over by a monument to the Virgin of Pilar, patron saint of Hispanic culture. Interpretive panels explain the history of the river and its course through the peninsula, making the visit an educational and evocative experience.

In addition, the area has tables and rest areas, making it ideal for enjoying a family outing. The constant murmur of the water and the coolness of the place invite you to relax and let yourself be carried away by the magic of the surroundings.

Heritage search

A visit to the source of the Ebro can be rounded off with a tour of the Campoo Valley, home to gems such as Argüeso Castle, the Romanesque collegiate church of San Pedro de Cervatos and, in winter, the Alto Campoo ski resorts.

An unmissable experience

Visiting the source of the River Ebro is much more than just contemplating a spring: it is feeling the force of a river that has shaped the history, culture and landscape of Spain. Fontibre thus becomes a meeting place between nature, tradition and memory, an essential visit for those who wish to discover the essence of southern Cantabria.
