The Valdeolea Menhir Route: a thousand-year journey in Cantabria

If you are looking for a getaway that combines history, nature and unique landscapes, the Valdeolea Menhir Route is a must-see in southern Cantabria. This archaeological itinerary, located near Mataporquera, offers a circular route of about 12 kilometres where you will discover some of the most important megalithic sites in northern Spain.

From the Hotel Araz in Las Rozas de Valdearroyo, it is very easy to reach the starting point of the route, making it a perfect excursion to complement your stay. In just a few minutes by car, you can be walking along trails that transport you back thousands of years.

The route begins next to the church of Santa Eulalia de Mataporquera and from there you will find a succession of authentic megalithic gems: El Cañón or Piedrahita, El Peñuco, La Llaneda, La Puentecilla, the majestic menhirs of La Matorra I and II, and the imposing El Cabezudo, almost 5 metres high, one of the tallest on the peninsula.

The route is suitable for all ages, with easy, well-marked sections that are ideal for both experienced hikers and families. In addition, each menhir has information panels explaining its origin and meaning, turning the walk into a real outdoor history lesson.

Walking among these stone giants is a unique experience: the contrast between the green landscape and the prehistoric monuments creates a special atmosphere that invites contemplation and peaceful enjoyment of nature.

Visiting the Valdeolea Menhir Route is undoubtedly a chance to discover one of the most fascinating traces of Cantabria’s past… and having it so close to the Hotel Araz is an opportunity not to be missed.
